Who is responsible for teaching English learners? As stated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, all teachers are required to make their content accessible (comprehensible) to English learners (ELs) regardless of their level of language proficiency. This doesn’t mean “watering down” content or simply pairing an EL with another student who shares the same language. We must do more. ELs are charged with a heavy load: learn English while also learning grade-level content. How does a classroom teacher manage this? In this course, you will explore

• how ELs are identified and assigned proficiency levels;
• what students are able to do at each language proficiency level and how this helps you plan modifications;
• how second language is acquired;
• how culture impacts learning; and
• instructional strategies that scaffold, modify and adapt instruction and assessment.

The broad objective of this course is to improve teaching efficacy by developing and implementing a repertoire of evidenced-proved practices. The culminating project meets this objective in several ways: participants will (1) integrate principles of backward design in planning their project lesson(s); (2) integrate evidenced-proven instructional strategies; and, (3) collect and examine student data. This research project provides participants with a template for future improvement.

The goal of this course is to impact student learning by using specific classroom scenarios in which teachers explore characteristics and benefits of Project- Based Learning (PBL). Throughout the course, teachers consider their own teaching practice as they follow a teacher new to project-based learning who discusses strategies with a mentor teacher. They also consider the ways that technology supports project-based approaches. Planning and project design modules guide teachers through organizing the curriculum, the classroom, technology, and students for successful 21st century projects. By improving PBL design and delivery, students will develop skills that will prepare them for today’s world. These skills include, but are not limited to, research, teamwork, problem solving, analyzing and synthesizing information. The assessment module demonstrates strategies for assessing students’ 21st century skills throughout an open-ended project. The course offers opportunities to apply the PBL concepts with action planning exercises.
